I want a non-sectarian Northern Ireland

This group is for all who believe every person is sacred.

You are sacred and I am sacred.

PLEDGE for a Better Future in Northern Ireland

I want a better future in Northern Ireland, a future free from sectarianism.

I want Northern Ireland to be a light for the world.

Therefore I commit myself to:

1 developing friendships between people of all traditions;

2 increasing my understanding of the unique and positive contribution each tradition brings to a better future;

3 deepening my understanding of sectarianism and the damage sectarian mindsets do to our world.

Information about the background to the group can be found on here:

..................................................................

We have been asked of a definition of non-sectarianism

We suggest this:

“Good belonging”

being confident in the community I belong to

and

wanting to celebrate the diversity that comes from the best in other communities.

REFLECTION

The “tradition” or “tribe” I grew up in is a complete “accident of birth”.

Our hope for this group is that it is a place where by sharing our diversity, we enrich each other and by better understanding the root of sectarianism we begin to eliminate it in ourselves.

It is only when we come to understand sectarianism, that I believe we can begin to reduce it.

And I suspect everyone (or almost everyone) who grows up in Northern Ireland very quickly learns to be sectarian.

It is very difficult to step outside of the biases I grew up in.

We all have a unique and different perspective on this and I hope we will share our thoughts and learn from each other.
