Federation of Gambia Muslim Students' Organisation (FEGAMSO)

In response to the growing feeling among Muslim students across the length and breath of the country to unite and pursue the cherished view of many Muslim Students that a national umbrella organization is long over due. In 1995, the Gambia was invited to attend an Islamic Conference in Sudan. The criterion for attendance was that participants must be members of Islamic Student Organizations in their home countries. At that time, there was no established general Islamic Student Organization in the Gambia that fulfils such criteria. Nonetheless, two people represented the country at that conference. Delegates to the 1995 student‘s Islamic Solidarity Association’s conference held in Sudan appointed a steering committee to explore the possibilities of laying a foundation for a federal type of organization.

It is in light of the above that an ad-hoc committee put together what will henceforth be referred to as the federal constitution to serve as guiding principles for members/member organization.

With the inactiveness of most outgoing members of FEGAMSO upon completion of their educational career, a youth organization was formed that would allow ex-FEGAMSO members to continue working towards the realization of similar objectives. The Youth Organization, called Assembly of Gambia Muslim Youth, shall be the parent body of FEGAMSO.

To sum up the aims of the federation, we intend to set up a common platform for students to learn from each other through discussions, interactions and general studies. We also aim to help students better understand the religion of Islam as enshrined in the Qur’an and Hadith and to promote and propagate Islam in the Gambia and other countries.
