City of Chester

Founded in 1644, nestled on the edge of the state’s southeastern region, Chester is Pennsylvania’s first city. Currently experiencing a major revitalization, the City of Chester has a rich historical past, a vibrant present, and a very promising future. Chester is becoming known as a major destination in the Philadelphia region as its waterfront undergoes a major metamorphosis, with the opening of Harrah’s Chester Casino & Racetrack in 2006 and the opening of PPL Park, home of MLS soccer team Philadelphia Union.

Chester is one of the most historic and culturally diverse areas in the region. We are a city with a big heart and a strong indomitable spirit with numerous claims to fame including William Penn's first landing; home of the original hoagie; birthplace of the talented jazz artist Ethel Waters; and place where the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. studied and preached.

Today Chester once again stands as a city ready to leave a historic impression on the region.
