Carnegie Mellon University Soaring Club (Unofficial)

CMU Soaring Club's goal is to promote soaring and soaring education to the CMU community.

Soaring is the sport of flying an unpowered plane. The glider is an unpowered plane that has the same type of controls as a powered plane, minus an engine. It is launched into the sky by a powered plane that pulls the glider with a tow rope. Altitude can be gained through rising hot air (thermals), ridge lift and mountain waves.

The activity is regulated by the Federal Aviation Administration and training occurs in planes with dual set of the controls, one for the student and one for the FAA certified instructor. To become a licensed glider pilot, practical flight time and ground study are required.
