Friends of the Malcolm X Library

Friends of the Malcolm X Library is a group of citizens who strive to assist in the development of the Malcolm X Library Branch and the Library system so that the Branch and the System may fulfill its literary, social and educational purposes; to encourage and arrange for gifts of books, materials, and other property to the Malcolm X Library in particular and the Library System in general; to promote public use and support of the Malcolm X Library, and appreciation of its value to the community; and to advocate for the Library in order to further the aforementioned objectives.

The Friends’ main tasks are:
- To prevent library closings –Malcolm X Library was once threatened with closure due to low circulation - encourage the community to check out more books.
- To prevent budget cuts or minimize the cuts- Malcolm X Library gets a reduced budget amount, again, due to low circulation/ readership.
- To extend library hours and open days.
- Supports literacy for adults and children in addition to numerous other programs
- Hosts a yearly essay contest for grades 4, 8, and 10th for the last 17 years
- Fundraise and sell donated books. Every dollar raised is matched dollar for dollar by the City of San Diego.
- The Friends of Malcolm X Library are gracious for any donations they get.

Friends of the Malcolm X Library is one chapter among 35 chapters chartered by the City of San Diego, under a 501-C (3) non-profit organization.
