Holman Fenwick Willan at Queen Mary University

Hi, my name is Mitan and I am the Campus Manager for Holman Fenwick Willan for 2014-15. I will keep you up to date with the firm’s events and deadlines as well as exclusive application tips so please watch this space for information about opportunities available to you at HFW throughout the year.

With over 450 lawyers operating in 13 offices worldwide, Holman Fenwick Willan LLP, headquartered in London’s Tower Hill, is a leading City law firm for international commerce. Its lawyers come from a range of backgrounds and the firm’s internationality is reflected in the languages used in the firm. In the London office alone, over 40 languages are spoken.

The firm’s key practice areas include insurance/reinsurance, aerospace, aviation, corporate, commodities, logistics banking & finance, construction and energy. The firm has particularly strong expertise in litigation and alternative dispute resolution and continues to grow its non-contentious practice. Its clients include major companies such as Barclays, Goldman Sachs, Allianz, BP, Gazprom, Glencore and Cathay Pacific.

HFW has a long-standing reputation for excellence in providing legal advice to the global maritime business community and accommodates one of the world’s largest shipping practices. Its maritime lawyers have been involved in all aspects of dry shipping, admiralty and crisis management. Examples of the firm’s recent and notably varied work include advising the salvors of the BP production drilling quarters platform vessel which nearly capsized in the Gulf of Mexico or negotiating (on a pro bono basis) the release of Paul and Rachel Chandler, the British couple that were hijacked by Somali pirates from their yacht in October 2009.

HFW recruits only 15 trainees every year which means that each individual is given a high degree of responsibility from early on and every contribution is valued. HFW trainees typically sit with a partner or a senior associate. HFW is one of the few firms to guarantee an international seat in one of the firm’s foreign offices; you may even do 2!

The firm runs several vacation schemes to enable students to gain a realistic insight into what working at HFW is like. Students are allocated to a practice group where they work with a supervisor and trainee mentor. Recent vacation scheme students have attended trials, as well as having the opportunity to go to client meetings and social activities. This is complemented by various workshops and presentations as well as group research task and a negotiation.
Applications for the 2014 vacation schemes will open on 1 November 2013.
