Sydney University Kendo Club

All Are Welcome

The USYD Kendo Club always welcomes members who possess a keen interest in the art of Kendo. It does not matter who you are, we will look after you by providing all of our skills and knowledge to allow you to reach your full potential.
All you need to do is turn up to one of our training sessions; regardless of your experience or skill, you can find out more about Kendo as a martial art or as a competitive sport.

Read below to find out why USYD Kendo might have what you need from a club!

Competition
Our club's structured and rigorous trainings provide an environment for experienced Kendoka and for those wishing to take Kendo to the next level. We have sent several players to national level competitions like Australian University Games (AUG) and Australian Kendo Championships (AKC) since our establishment in 2004, as well as achieved several notable results in local tournaments. We boast a high-tension environment where self-development and effort through training is highly rewarded.

Our head coach is Katsuhiko Takayama, 5th Dan in Kendo. Takayama is a graduate from Saitama University and has experience in coaching over 6 different Kendo teams. Takayama is a former finalist in the All-Japan Universities Tournament. Aiding him are assistant coaches Mark Kim, 3rd Dan, and Peter Jeong, 3rd Dan. Kim and Jeong have both represented on national level competitions in Australia and Korea respectively.

Social
Our club follows a well known protocol of "train hard, play hard". While training can be tough at times, it also creates bonds with fellow peers who undergo similar trainings, and within a short time you will find irreplaceable friends in the club.

Our club is one big family and we all work together to be in harmony. Outside of trainings, we also re-associate through pub crawls, cocktail parties, barbeques, bushwalking, mainstream sports and annual dinners.

A Way of Life
Not many people join Kendo straight off to discipline themselves, but they find themselves soon immersed in this amazing way of life.
